Youth Advisory Council on International Climate Change Appointed
The Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has formed a Youth Advisory Council on International Climate Change, consisting of ten young Australians aged 18 to 30. This council ensures that the perspectives of young people are included in Australia's international climate change discussions, such as those related to the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The council's tenure lasts until December 2025.
Applications for the Youth Advisory Council opened in August 2024, and today it was announced that 10 young Australians have been appointed to the council. The members will share their individual perspectives and ideas for the development and implementation of ambitious climate policies and actions.
The council serves as a platform for the voices of young Australians to be heard both in national conversations and on the global stage. It will ensure that the insights, ideas, and expertise of young Australians are incorporated into Australia’s international climate change negotiations, including involvement in the Paris Agreement, the UNFCCC process, and broader climate change efforts.
The council’s scope and work plan will be co-developed with DCCEEW, ensuring the council is empowered to lead and drive initiatives.
