Nobbys Beach Landcare Day

Youth-led restoration on Country at Newcastle’s iconic dunes

ReGen Alliance teamed up with Nobbys Beach Landcare for a meaningful day of coastal restoration, hosted by long-time site coordinators Chris and Barb, who are deeply committed to engaging young people in hands-on environmental care across Newcastle.

Set against the backdrop of Nobbys Beach, this event brought together a group of 10 students for a full day of ecological learning and action. Following a safety briefing and expert demonstration, students split into two working groups:

One group tackled the removal of deep-rooted Bitou Bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera), an invasive weed that dominates dunes, crowds out native species, and destabilises the ecosystem.

The other group focused on revegetation, planting over 150 native dune plants, including species that play a critical role in stabilising sandy soils, improving biodiversity, and supporting coastal resilience.

In the lead-up to the day, students also participated in a learning activity to compare Bitou Bush with a similar native species, Scaevola calendulacea (Beach Fan Flower), building their skills in plant ID and ecological decision-making.

🌱 Environmental Impact:

150+ native coastal plants established on-site to support dune stability and local habitat

Strategic weed removal of invasive Bitou Bush to reduce competition and erosion

Enhanced biodiversity corridors along the Newcastle coastline

Strengthened local ecological resilience to wind, wave, and climate stressors

💡 Youth Impact:

Increased knowledge of weed ecology, coastal plant ID, and habitat restoration

Boosted confidence through hands-on action and meaningful teamwork

Fostered a sense of place, purpose, and care for Country

Direct experience in environmental stewardship and Landcare collaboration

This was more than a planting day — it was an opportunity for young people to step into the role of active custodians, building both ecological understanding and personal connection to the landscape.
